Facts About Rats morphed out of the Boston punk band 8 Balls who were included on the Where’s Stanton Park compilation. Featuring lead “voice” Bobby Gaudreau, their shows were energetic in a seventies punk sorta way. A typical show would start with Bobby’s frantic pacing and often end with absolute chaos on stage. Once Bobby was knocked out cold by a flying guitar! In the set proper, the Rats dished out some great ’77 styled punk with hooks that would stick to you like the glue you were probably sniffing at the time.
This three-song 45 features an uptempo version of the Queers pop-punk hit “I Don’t Wanna Get Involved With You,” which was co-written by Bobby while he was a member of that band. A heavy dose of Ramones beefed up with lots of guitars and a super catchy refrain produces what would be an instant radio smash in a perfect universe. A highlight at Facts About Rats shows, “Involved” is what prompted this single in the first place.
“Never Alone,” written by guitarist Greg Fiore, is another super blast of raw pop-punk energy, which might not have sounded out of place on an early Moving Targets album and is a hint at what Greg produced with his subsequent band Underball. Again a strong refrain makes this one radio friendly while still retaining a very live sound. And speaking of live, the closer on this 45 is the punky “Go Away” which blasts down the highway at 100 miles an hour while Bobby tells us in no uncertain terms to “Go Away!”
