Or what doesn’t happen on this site
Because I have become increasingly concerned about the flagrant overuse of advertising and tracking on most web pages, I have headed in the opposite direction when developing my sites. It probably would be more fun to list what did not go into building this site rather than talking about the flavor-of-the-month JavaScript framework (that I am not using anyhow).
- So how did you build this site if not with the tools the cool kids are using?
- I’m glad you asked! This site was built by hand with HTML an CSS. A pinch of JavaScript was employed to enlarge photos and two small Perl scripts handle the index and contact pages. That’s it! I enjoy designing and building the pages by hand, so I have no need for a “content management system.” I will manage it myself, thank you.
- Where are all the ads?
- No ads allowed on this site! I worked in advertising for many years. I’ve had enough…
- But you must be watching us on the site. Everybody does it…
- Exactly why would I? Not trying to sell you anything.
- What about cookies?
- There is no need for cookies on this site, it’s just here for you to read.
- What about links to your social media profiles?
- Are you talking about links to nowhere?
In other words, this is a basic site like you might have seen in 1995 if the styling was better back then. This site is here for the content, plain and simple. Hopefully, I have presented it in a way that you will enjoy and that it will perform quickly no matter what browser you are using.
The font for the text and most of the interface of this site is Fira Sans available from FontSquirrel. The headline font is Shangri La, also available from Font Squirrel. The font licenses can be be viewed here and here.
